There is no better summer plan in Saline County than a slow float down the Saline River. The water is clear, the current is gentle and the gravel bars make perfect lunch stops. The trick is packing light and packing right.
Before you leave the house
- Check the river level and weather the morning you go.
- Top off the tires. A cordless inflator makes it a two-minute job in the driveway.
- Put the car emergency kit in the trunk. Gravel roads to the put-in can be rough.
- Pack water, sunscreen and a dry bag for phones and keys.
What to wear
Slip-on barefoot shoes are ideal. They drain fast, grip wet rocks and come off easily at the truck. Add a pair of UV400 aviators, and keep a spare pair in the glovebox because someone always forgets theirs.
After the float
A mini car vacuum takes care of the sand and gravel that rides home in the footwells. If the dog came along, rinse those paws at the door before they meet the couch.
See you on the gravel bar!
